Yard and Lawn Tips for the Fall

When warm days of summer start to wind down, the leaves turning brown, a bit dull, and lacking vibrancy, it's the ideal time to give your lawn some much-needed attention and care.

With the cooler weather and the upcoming winter season, your yard will benefit greatly from a little extra effort from you this fall.

Water deeply

As the temperatures start to drop, it's easy to think your lawn doesn't need as much water. However, it’s important to keep giving your grass the moisture it needs, allowing the roots to soak up enough water to sustain them through the colder winter months.

Feed the soil

Fall is the perfect season to give your lawn some extra nutrients. This is the best time to apply fertilizer, especially one that's made for fall or cool-season grasses.

Using the right fertilizer now will help strengthen your grass, providing it with the essential nutrients it needs to survive the winter and come back strong in the spring.

Overseed bare spots

Are there dry patches of land in your yard?  Now’s a great time to fix them. The cooler weather is perfect for cool-season grass seeds to start growing.

Overseeding these thin or patchy areas now helps your lawn grow thicker and healthier by the time spring arrives.

Control weeds

Fall is also a good time to tackle those stubborn weeds. While your warm-season grass may be slowing down or going dormant, many cool-season weeds are still actively growing.

This makes it the perfect time to apply a weed killer, known as a post-emergent herbicide, specifically designed to target these cool-season weeds.

Clean up the yard

As the leaves start falling, it's important to keep up with raking regularly. If leaves are left to pile up, they can overshadow your grass, blocking sunlight and trapping moisture, which can lead to pests and diseases taking over your lawn.

Try to rake often to keep your yard clear. And don’t just toss the leaves away. Chop them up or add them to a compost pile. They break down into a natural fertilizer that can be really good for your lawn and garden!

Mow low and slow

As fall goes on, you’ll want to lower the height of your lawnmower gradually. Cutting the grass a little shorter helps prevent fungus from growing under the fallen leaves, which can be a problem if your grass stays too long. Mowing a bit lower also encourages your grass to grow stronger, making it better prepared to handle the winter months ahead.

Aerate your lawn

Also, take the time to aerate any compacted soil in your yard. By aerating, you're helping to loosen up the soil, which improves drainage and allows more oxygen to flow to the roots. This simple DIY task can make a big difference in the overall health of your lawn, giving your grass the best chance to grow strong and green.
